Seamless Borders - seamlessborders.com.au

The Seamless Borders project won the Promotion – Business Attraction category at the 2007 national EDA conference in Sydney.

More than 220 people from Local Government Councils, State Governments and Regional Development Agencies across Australia attended the awards Gala Dinner. Sixty eight cities and regional organisations from all parts of Australia entered the 2007 Awards.

The Gold Coast and Tweed regions are joined together as a popular and busy tourist region, yet they are also separated by the invisible line, which is the NSW Queensland border.

For many small businesses, including home-based businesses in the broader region, the presence of the border and what that means in terms of differing local laws and requirements, adds up to a major irritation for those whose market, takes them across the state divide.

TEDC, Tweed Shire Council and Gold Coast City Council, identified the need to address this issue, resulting in the formation of a Cross Border Working Party, which identified a list of broader issues affecting business and economic development in the Tweed and Gold Coast regions.

Utilising the Federal Governments RRIF funding program, the $570,000 project led to the creation of a web portal to lessen the impact by removing duplication and reducing the burden shouldered by business.

www.seamlessborders.com.au was officially launched by the Federal Minister for Small Business and Tourism, the Hon. Fran Bailey MP, on April 20, 2007.

The portal displays informative content on compliance, licensing and guidance tools, all packaged and available on the one handy site.  It has estimated to have saved small business $6 million in the first year.

The project has strengthened ties between the Gold Coast and Tweed Councils, between local industries associations and state government agencies.  However this project is only seen as the first step in breaking down the barriers relating to cross-border, regulation and business compliance.  TEDC and Gold Coast City Council, through the Cross Border Working Party, continue to communicate with representatives from both New South Wales and Queensland Governments on cross-border business compliance and regulatory issues; as well as identify sources of funding for resourcing future cross-border initiatives.
